SUMMARY:Alexandria Complete Streets
DESCRIPTION:Alexandria is among numerous jurisdictions around the nation that are adopting an optimistic “Complete Streets” paradigm in re-designing our existing streets to be “designed and operated to enable safe, efficient, and comfortable travel for all users.”\nHowever, while the concept is celebrated by some groups, implementation of Complete Streets Complete Streets in Alexandria has met with significant opposition for a variety of reasons. Objections are largely from citizens who see the program’s lane eliminations as hostile to individual automobile use and disruptive to neighborhood traffic patterns for the sake of a small minority of cyclists.\nThis program will be Monday, March 24 at 7 PM at the Lyceum. 201 South Washington street, Alexandria, VA.  Reception at 6:30 PM.  Rod Kuckro, Agenda Alexandria Board Member, will be the moderator.\nPanelists:\n\nAlex Carroll – Program Manager for the City of Alexandria Complete Streets\nCarter Flemming – Chair Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations\nKanti Srikanth – Director at Meropolitan Washington Council of Governments\nDane Lauritzen – Alexandria City Resident\n\n\nImportant Update: Registration and Attendance Information\nWe’ve made attending our in-person events easier than ever! Starting in March, online registration is no longer required. Simply arrive at the venue, and you can pay the $10 entrance fee (or a higher donation if you wish), renew your membership, or become a new member — all at the door.\nWe gladly accept credit cards, checks (made payable to Agenda Alexandria), and cash for your convenience.\nFor those unable to attend in person, we will continue to offer a free livestream of our programs. Please note that only in-person attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions directly to the panelists.\nWe look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and appreciate your continued support in fostering thoughtful community conversations.\n\nAlex Carroll is Program Manager for the City of Alexandria Complete Streets.  Carroll plans and implements projects to enhance mobility, access, and safety for people of all ages, abilities, and modes, and she oversees the City’s Vision Zero Program to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries.\nCarroll has led major projects including corridor redesigns, intersection improvements, sidewalk installations, multi-use trails, automated speed enforcement, speed limit reductions, and more.\nPrior to her work with the City of Alexandria, Carroll worked with the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and with the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research. She holds a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of South Florida.\n\nCarter Flemming is a native Alexandrian. She has been involved in many issues involving transportation including the Seminary Road diet, Duke Street in Motion, and the more recent Pickett Street Road diet.\nFlemming has been an active volunteer and board member for many decades in a variety of organizations in Alexandria including The Campagna Center, The Alexandria Red Cross, the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, the Alexandria Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, Senior Services of Alexandria, the Seminary Hill Association, and the Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations, where she currently serves as Chair. She was named an Alexandria Living Legend in 2017.\n\nKanti Srikanth oversees and coordinates the integration of transportation, land use, housing, climate, energy, and air quality planning programs. He has more than 30 years of experience in transportation and regional planning. Kanti has served as the Staff Director for the Transportation Planning Board at COG since 2014 and as Deputy Executive Director since 2019.\n\nDane Lauritzen is a resident, pedestrian, biker, and commuter who lives in Alexandria and works for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC.
