The Virginia General Assembly passed legislation this past session to create a retail market for cannabis — Governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed this legislation. The Commonwealth had legalized cannabis for adult possession and cultivation in 2021. Cannabis is currently legal and available only to treat medical conditions at state-regulated dispensaries. But concerns linger as to the health effects of chronic cannabis consumption and to what extent a black market for cannabis contributes to criminal activity. What exactly is legal now? Should cannabis be available for retail sale in Virginia? How would it work? Could it affect law enforcement? What about people already serving time now for marijuana crimes?

Agenda Alexandria will host a dynamic panel discussion at the historic Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum, starting promptly at 7:00 PM. The focus of this engaging program will be centered on the proposed Monumental Arena and event venue in Potomac Yard, a topic of considerable interest and importance to the local community. Note: for over 25 years, Agenda Alexandria has been Alexandria’s premiere organization that discusses the issues without taking sides. We’ve been able to accomplish this by inviting decision makers who are directly involved with the topics that we discuss. Board members of Agenda Alexandria made several attempts to invite decision-makers from Monumental Sports and Entertainment, JBG Smith (owner of the Potomac Yard property), and the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP) to participate as panelists. All parties declined to participate during the March 25 program.
