The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted every aspect of our society, but the impact on our schools is particularly stark. The pressure to return to “normal” is high, but what will the new normal look like? From classroom crowding to social distancing, Alexandria schools are navigating a number of new opportunities and challenges. As we go back to school, Agenda Alexandria will explore topics such as “what do we really need to do in order to Open ACPS?,” “how will we keep students safe while also giving them a rich education?,” ”how can we support both students and teachers as we make up for the last 16 months of learning loss?,” and “What is the current state of the relationship between the City and ACPS?”

Back to School: Learning in the new “normal”

Agenda Alexandria will take a look at the entity providing potable water and the different entities involved in the intake and outtake process. We'll do an overview and breakdown of the water bill charges and fees from entities such as Virginia American Water, Alexandria Renew Enterprises, and the City of Alexandria. We will address historical changes, including collection of storm water taxes via real estate taxes from 2010 to 2017 and then “storm water fees” from 2017 to present. Finally, we will also take a look at the infrastructure itself. Agenda Alexandria will discuss flows to Potomac either directly via storm water system or after processing by Alexandria Renew Enterprises from sanitary sewer system.

Agenda Alexandria is taking a look at the role of the city manager, what kind of responsibilities the job holds and what kind of influence the title commands. (Pre-recorded) Panelists: Phil Sunderland was city manager of Alexandria from 2000 to 2005. For 12 years, he served as senior vice president and general counsel at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. He is currently on the board of directors of the Northern Virginia Health Foundation. Janet Barnett is the former deputy director of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities responsible for recreation and cultural arts programs. After retiring from the city in 2007, she became the executive director of Senior Services of Alexandria. She is currently a member of the Agenda Alexandria board of directors. David Speck is a former member of the Alexandria City Council and a former member of the House of Delegates representing Alexandria. In 2016, he retired as the managing director for investments with the Speck-Caudron Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors. He was a founding member of Agenda Alexandria when the nonprofit was created in 1998.

Who runs the city?

Since 1974, the Torpedo Factory Art Center has been more than a landmark in Alexandria. It has uniquely demonstrated the city’s devotion to and support of artists and the benefits they bring to the local economy. Now, the City Council is considering a range of options to raise more revenue and increase vibrancy from the operations of the former U.S. Navy munitions factory. Options include reconfiguring the space and adding new commercial features, relocating or reducing some of the artist studio space and turning the building over to a public private partnership. Agenda Alexandria will explore the issues surroundings options for changing the Torpedo Factory Art Center at its January 24, 2022 virtual meeting starting at 7:00pm.
