Housing is a contentious issue that has been with us (seemingly) forever. For some housing is an investment and for others it’s a human right. Agenda:Alexandria (established in 1998 as a non-partisan, issue-neutral non-profit dedicated to respectful discourse) will host an informed discussion with a panel of experts representing multiple sides of the housing issue. The goal: To shed light where there has been much heat.
It will be on Monday, February 23 at The Forum on the Minnie Howard (high school) campus (3775 W Braddock Rd), starting at 7:00pm (social starts at 6:30pm).
The panel will be asked about the state of Alexandria housing development; the economics of housing (e.g., does increasing supply in Alexandria really lead to reduced cost); density (must we maximize it to create affordability, impacts on city services and city character); how to balance the conflicting interests of developers, homeowners, and citizens-in-need; the impact of federal and state policies on local decisions; Alexandria’s role in the regional housing shortage; what do we really mean by “affordable” and other housing buzzwords; property tax implications; and how many affordable units will it take before we are out of the housing crisis?
The panel includes the Director of Housing for the City of Alexandria, the Director of Housing Alexandria (a non-profit community developer), a Professor of Economics who specializes in housing and regional economies, and the Chair of the Council for a Livable Alexandria.
The panel will address questions posed by the Agenda:Alexandria Board, questions posed by those in attendance, and by questions submitted to [email protected]. Attendance costs $10 for non-members of Agenda:Alexandria (free for current members).
Agenda:Alexandria would not be possible without the support from our Members and Sponsors:
