Is ACPS Meeting the Mark?

MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2026

Location: George Washington Masonic National Memorial. (101 Callahan Drive)

Time: 6:30 pm Social (food, refreshments, and conversation), 7:00-8:30pm Panel

The City of Alexandria allocates one-third of its budget to education. Our students need and deserve an excellent education. Are we meeting the mark in Alexandria? That is the overarching question that this Agenda:Alexandria event will focus on. Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOL) tests are a key tool used to measure our students’ education and therefore the impact of the city’s investment. An SOL is designed to assess whether students are meeting state grade-level standards in reading, math, science, and history. The tests provide a statewide snapshot that informs school accountability and high school graduation requirements.

What is the trajectory of our test scores and how can we improve? How do we compare to our neighboring jurisdictions? If our numbers are in need of improvement, what specific efforts should we demand? And, how can parents help their students succeed?

Our program will address these questions through a moderated discussion featuring four expert panelists representing a wide range of expertise and perspectives. Final makeup of the panel will be announced closer to the date.

Please join us and bring your questions regarding testing, school funding, and how we can improve as well as how our education budget resources are being utilized for our students and could be better allocated. In short, what do we need to do as a city to help all our students realize their potential?

We hope you will join us for what will be an important, engaging, and informative discussion about our city’s schools. Our students are counting on us to get this right!
